The Singles 86>98
Depeche Mode announce the release of their new album 'The Singles 86-98' on 28 September 1998. The 21 track album will be released on cassette, double CD and as a limited, numbered, boxed triple vinyl set. There is also a video and DVD available from 20 March 2000. At the start of the DVD is a ten minute interview with the band discussing the videos. The DVD finishes with an exclusive twenty minute documentary on Depeche Mode covering their career up to the release of the album '86-98'.
The album contains every single the band has released since 1986, including 'Personal Jesus', 'Enjoy The Silence', 'Policy Of Truth' and 'Barrel Of A Gun' as well as 'Little 15', released as a single in France in 1988. It also features the forthcoming single 'Only When I Lose Myself', recorded in London this year with producer Tim Simenon.
Depeche Mode have sold over 35 million albums to date since their first single was released in 1981; their last album, 'Ultra', reached No 1 in the charts in 1997. The new album is a companion to the 'Singles 81-85' collection released in 1985.

Depeche Mode
There are few bands who have had such influence on - while remaining so far removed from - the prevailing musical mainstream. While the legendary group has never courted celebrity status, their music has continued to have a deep and enduring impact on popular culture, Artists as diverse as Air, Smashing Pumpkins, Tricky, Les Rhythms Digitales, Primal Scream, Placebo and many others have all acknowledged a musical debt to Depeche Mode. And there is no more compelling compendium of that legacy than the 21 tracks that comprise The Singles 86>98, an indispensable chronicle of one of modern music's most influential bands.
Featuring every single released by Depeche Mode since 1986 - including such international hits as "Personal Jesus," "Enjoy The Silence" and "Barrel Of A Gun" - The Singles 86>98 is a perfect bookend to the 1985 compilation, Catching Up With Depeche Mode. The new collection highlights such rarities as "Little 15," released as a single-only in France in 1988, and a five version of "Everything Counts," recorded in 1989, as well as Depeche Mode's latest release, "Only When i Lose Myself," produced by Tim Simenon.
Hailing from Basildon, Essex, UK, Depeche Mode was formed in 1980 with original members Vince Clarke, Andrew Fletcher, Dave Gahan and Martin Gore. Originally called Composition Of Sound, the group soon changed its name to Depeche Mode ("fast fashion") after the title of a French style magazine. It was, perhaps, the only time the group was part of any wider trend. Switching from guitars to full electronics, Depeche Mode found themselves with a burgeoning club reputation in the first flush of the post-punk movement and made their recoding debut with "Photographic", a track that appeared on the highly influential 1981 compilation Some Bizarre.
Even before that album was released, however, the band had met producer and Mute Records founder Daniel Miller at a London gig He immediately offered Depeche Mode what they wanted most - the chance to make a single. It was the beginning of a unique and groundbreaking relationship between band and record company that became a crucial factor in the subsequent success of both. The band made their Mute debut in 1981 with the single "Dreaming Of Me", followed by "New Life" and "Just Can't Get Enough", the group's first Top 10 charter and the beginning of an historic run of hit tracks. The group's debut album, Speak And Spell, was released that same year and remained on British charts for three weeks, Not bad for Year One.
Constant touring led to the departure of the band's primary songwriter Vince Clarke. who, preferring to work in the studic, would go on to form Yazoo with Alison Moyet. Martin Gore took over as the band's songwriting mainstay and, over the following 17 years, emerged as one of the most accomplished songwriters of his generation. Gore's first contribution, "See You," was released to wide acclaim in early 1982, the same year that new member Alan Wilder was recruled, completing a lineup that would remain intact for the next 13 years.
Two more hit singles followed - The Meaning Of Love and Leare in Silence - before Depeche Mode released their second atum, A Emken Frame, in late 1982 Construction Time Again, ther 1983 releese, conimed Depeche Mode's status as major musical innovators, exploring the quter edges of ehrciogy through computers, sampling and other cutting-edge nural advancek A huge hit both at home and in Europe Consincsen Agaun laid the groundwork for the group's sustained popularty on the contrent in ubsaquent years. It was a populanty mirored in Ametion wilk the 1984 album release of Some Great Reward, festunng the smash and breskvoogh snge "Peaple Are People," By any standard, Depeche Mode had estabished themacives sanu world-class recording and performing enlity. The group would take a well-desurved break in 1985, releasing two singles - "Shake The Disease" and "it's Called A Heart - along with the above-mentioned compilation Catching Up With Depeche Mode, However, they would return with a vengeance the following year, with a massive international tour and their biggest album to date, Black Celebration.
What followed would catapult Depeche Mode into unqualified superstar status, beginning in late 1987 with the release of their fifth studio album, Music For The Masses, followed by an enormously successful American tour, culminating with an appearance at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles before 75,000 fervent fans in June of '88. The historic concert was captured on both the live album 101 and the documentary film of the same name shot by D.A. Pennebaker (ol Dent Look Back fame). In 1989, the single "Personal Jesus" became the biggest selling 12" single in the history of Warner Bros, and Reprise Records and served as a springboard for the SRO World Violation tour, which ended with three sold-out shows at London's Wembley Arena. 1990's Violator showcased a harder-edged sound for the group, and one that would eam them an even wider audience as the album went on to sell over six million copies worldwide, It was followed, in 1993, by "Songs Of Faith And Devotion", which would top charts in the U.S, U.K. and across Europe and spawn the bestselling Devotional long-form video and the "Songs Of Faith And Devotion Live" album.
The collective mental and physical implosion that followed the grueling 14-month Devotional world tour, during which the band played 156 shows, almost brought down the curtain on one of the most successful musical partnerships in music history. Folowing the departure of Alan Wilder, the three remaining members of Depeche Mode began a long and difficult process of rebuilding their personal and professional lives. In 1997 they would mark a triumphant return to form, first with the release of an eagerly-awaited new single, "Barrel Of A Gun", followed by a new album Ultra, produced by Tim Simenon (mastermind behind the success of Bomb The Bass) and featuring the hit single "I'ts No Good" The fall of 1998 will see Depeche Mode embark on their first tour in four years in support of the release of The Singles 86>98.
Numbers alone amply testify to the enduring influence of Depeche Mode - the combined number of weeks their singes have spent on UK charts adds up to a staggering four years, while wordwide, their albums have sold in excess of 40 milion unts But it is in the music tsef that continues to place Depeche Mode in a cass of one.
